Readers accepted the Californio aristocracy as portrayed and the Ramona myth was born. Ramona was immensely popular almost immediately upon its publication in , with more than 15, copies sold in the ten months before Jackson's death in There have been more than reissues to date and the book has never been out of print. Subtle racism may have contributed to the popularity of the character of Ramona and the novel.
Of mixed race, she was described as beautiful, with black hair and blue eyes. Errol Wayne Stevens, of the California Historical Society , notes several contemporary reviews of the novel in which writers dismissed the idea that Ramona could have been part Native American, a race which they characterized as "dull, heavy and unimpressionable," and "lazy, cruel, cowardly, and covetous. Jackson was disappointed that she was unable to raise public concerns about the struggles of the Indians in California, as readers were taken with the romantic vision of Californio society.

However, in her book The Annotated Ramona , the historian Antoinette May argued that the popularity of the novel contributed to Congress passing the Dawes Act in This was the first American law to address Indian land rights and it forced the breakup of communal lands and redistribution to individual households, with sales of what the government said was "surplus land". The runaway popularity of the novel inspired jurisdictions to name schools Ramona High School in Riverside , streets, freeways the San Bernardino Freeway was originally named the Ramona Freeway and towns Ramona, California after the novel's heroine.
The novel contributed to making southern California a tourist destination, as many people wanted to see the locations featured in the book. Its publication coincided with the opening of Southern Pacific Railroad 's Southern California rail lines and fed a tourism boom. As a result, locations all over Southern California tried to emphasize their Ramona connections.
Jackson died without specifying the locations on which her story was based. Two places claimed to have inspired her work: Rancho Camulos , near Piru , and Rancho Guajome in Vista , as she had visited both before writing her novel. Camulos became the most accepted "Home of Ramona" due to several factors.
Moreno Ranch is described in a way that is similar to the location of Camulos. With the company engaged in a rate war, it made the trip to Camulos relatively easy and affordable. Finally, the Del Valle family of Camulos welcomed tourists: they exploited the association in marketing their products, labeling their oranges and wine as "The Home of Ramona" brand.
In contrast, Guajome did not publicly become associated with Ramona until an article in Rural Californian made the claim. Additionally, the Couts family, who owned the property, were not eager to have flocks of tourists on the grounds, possibly due to a falling out between Jackson and Sra. Although no record existed of Jackson's having visited there, it too became a popular tourist destination, a status continuing for years after the novel's publication. The Estudillo House was unique in marketing solely in terms of Ramona -related tourism. The caretaker sold pieces of the house to tourists, which hastened its deterioration.
In , the new owner John D.

Spreckels hired archited Hazel Wood Waterman to remodel the house to more closely match descriptions in the novel. When the reconstruction was completed in , the building reopened as a full-fledged Ramona tourist attraction. Lubo called herself the "real Ramona. Sixteen years after Lubo's death, local people erected a "Ramona monument" at her gravesite in Most historians believe that the fictional Moreno Ranch is an amalgamation of various locations and was not intended to represent a single place. Because of the novel's extraordinary popularity, the public perception merged fact and fiction.
California historian Walton Bean wrote:. The novel contributed to the unique cultural identity of Southern California and the whole of the Southwest. The architecture of the missions had recently gained national exposure and local restoration projects were just beginning. Railroad lines to Southern California were just opening and, combined with the emotions stirred by the novel, the region suddenly gained national attention.

Perfect view from the terrace. Basic but you have all you need - comfortable bed, small kitchen corner, etc. Unbeatable value for money. Would definitely recommend. Good location.
Beautiful gardens. Great cats. A very nice host. Really close to the beach, market and restaurants. Good location to travel from to other places on the island. We had wifi, but my devices had to keep searching for it so it was sometimes a little slow. Certain websites wouldn't log on to it as it is unsecured. Not a complaint as 4G signal was good so my phone stepped up to the plate, this is just maybe something to consider for an upgrade. Great view, room was exactly what I wanted which was a bed, shower and air conditioning.
Far away from the beach and baldly connection with airport and other city Little bit schould be better cleaned, but for this price was good. Nice place and for this price is ok. Too many cats. Just the fact that I will miss so much :. Everything was wonderful! Very friendly and helpful. Showering would lead to flooding the whole bathroom and you would have to mop every time after taking a shower. The owner Diona is a lovely, very warm and welcoming host and greeted us with coffee and cookies and we even had the choice which room we would like to stay in. The room was rather a bit small, but you don't really spend much time in it, being on this beautiful island and having this nice terrace with gorgeous view in front :.
Nice and cosy, felt like at home. Kitchen sparsely equipped. WiFi hit and miss. Quite small room for 2 people, OH is 6ft odd and not too small so could be tricky with space. Lovely owner, so helpful. Lovely sun terrace. The beds are really hard, not that comfortable. Watch out from the stray cats as they can enter the room, as we had an incident where a cat entered the closet and stayed the entire night in there. On the day of check out we were rushed out last minute at 9. It is better to communicate that a night before since booking.
The view from room 7 was perfect and gorgeous, great sea view! Everything best ever. Dhionisia the best she is so kind, she help me soo much. To get there you have to pass through really narrow streets. The room is small, little furniture. Thre view from the terrace is lovely. A big parking. The hosts are responsive to every need. We received fruits from their garden. The internet was very bad in apartment, if you want to make the call you have to go outside the room which is very uncomfortable.
The bathroom is very bad. Also the water pressure is bad. Location is amazing, Lourdata beach is one of the most beautiful beaches of Kefalonia in my opinion. No toilet roll refill. No clean towels. No clean bed sheets. Value for money we don't think we had , first time we've ever had to supply our own toilet roll! Bed sheets were never changed neither were the towels! Back of the hotel looked derelict so in the morning we couldn't sit there to have a coffee. There were some lovely restaurant's Liza's grill being the best by a mile also cafe platanos great for drinks. Best tip hire a car.
