I would need to grow more thumbs.
Here are five reasons I think Rankin will be the perfect Roger Mac. Slight spoilers nothing decisive, I swear for the books. In the books, Roger is green-eyed, for reasons I will not name. Because of the series casting differing slightly from what the book had outlined, Roger should really more resemble the adorable blue-eyed boy they used for the part in Season 1. Outlander has not always cast its actors to match the book descriptions exactly, but what it has done is match excellent actors almost eerily to the perfect parts.
This will be no different, and time will prove it. Short of an anime emoji or a cartoon swashbuckling cat, few actors can make it seem like their eyes are doubling in size with pathos, or that each individual beard follicle is erect in anger. Without giving too much away, he is one of the few POV characters in the books aside from Claire herself, so the way that Roger views the Outlander world is telling and important.

With an enlarging cast and selective dialogue from the books, it will become more important than ever to project rather than overtly state emotional nuances. Roger is not only the foster son of a clergyman who was a history aficionado, but an Oxford scholar. There is an earnest forthrightness to the character that contrasts with an almost self-effacing charm.
Roger is curious and driven, but emotionally intelligent as well. On Outlander, intellect cannot always protect its bearer, but it sure makes things interesting. I cannot wait to see what Rankin does with what lies ahead for Roger. In the novels, Roger Wakefield is musical, able to play the bodhran and sing folk songs. While I am sure a voice could have been dubbed in or the playing faked, how much better to cast an actor who is able to perform as needed. Rankin is a lovely singer , and plays the guitar as well. His tenor voice has a vulnerability to it that not only serves the characterization, but his accent is clearly heard, which adds another layer of believability to the role.
Bonus: More Outlander music means more Bear McCreary , and more beautifully evocative covers of classic Scottish folk tunes. I am tearing up already. This last one is not so much a show-related reason, but one for the fandom. Sam Heughan is very active on social media, frequently carrying the bulk of the interaction for other show stars, who are more private.
While that is certainly their prerogative, Rankin is an avid social media participant who is very gracious and humorous, and his interviews reveal a real introspection about his characters. While his fandom is sure to expand exponentially as word of his casting spreads, we can only hope he continues to stay as gregarious as he has been, and to provide wonderfully nuanced interviews that continue to reveal Outlander as a first-rate production. I can finally take down that vision board.
