The Public Safety Writer's Association bestowed the grand prize for published nonfiction on his book last month in Las Vegas. He gets a plaque and a nominal cash prize, but that's secondary to recognition from the organization, the year-old said.
East drew on his 15 years of experience as a city police officer to pen the collection of short stories. They include some of the most heinous crimes Saginaw has seen, including the Karen King murder, of which the book's cover art features. He got an offer to work for a sports marketing firm in Ann Arbor, but the pay wasn't sufficient, so East worked in the former Arbor Drug chain as a retail loss-prevention officer.
The job stirred an interest in law enforcement, and he enrolled in Delta College's police academy, graduating in East started writing at 23, but after half a chapter he tabled it until , when he wrote his first book, "Burden of the Badge. His constituents shunned the book; they feared it would discourage people from entering the police academy. The book painted a grim picture of police work, and many of his police associates have expressed to him that it is not what they thought it would be.

His intent in writing "Burden" was to show that the work might not be that friendly. The second book did not target a police audience exclusively, since he found most of his readers to be families and friends of cops, people who were looking for some insight into the job, East said.
